Our buffalo breeding project has produced in excess of 300 clean buffalo.
For years we searched extensively for the best possible genes that now make up our breeding herd.
We currently have more than a hundred premium sable in our Bietjie Bosveld camp in Bothaville. Our sable breeding programme consists of only the finest handpicked cows and calves, grouped with the biggest bulls available. With specialist care, strategic breeding methods and veterinary expertise, we aim to reproduce this magnificent antelope into an even bigger and better species.
The ratio of sables per camp is 10 cows for each bull. The chosen cows match the criteria of having at least 30 inch horns and the chosen young cows have the growth potential for up to 30 inch horns.
Cows that do not eventually mature with the required 30 inch horns are moved to separate camps. The breeding bull is also replaced every 2 years.
This systematic approach in sable breeding enables us to generate larger-horned sables. Our objective is to reproduce a sable bull with a horn measurement of 55 inches – which would earn it ‘Giant Sable’ status, and would be regarded a superior animal within its breed.
